Mount Carmel Year 9 pupil Sienna has been raising awareness of mental health issues in school. She bravely spoke to staff at the beginning of a staff meeting to highlight the issue and followed with a moving, relevant prayer. Her year group Assistant Pastoral Leader Mrs Heys and her close friends have supported her through this initiative and commented on how proud they all are of her.
Sienna read out the following statement; “Mental health problems affect 1 in 4 of adults and 1 in 8 young people. Too many people are made to feel isolated, ashamed and worthless because of this. Having known people suffer with mental health problems, I want to help raise awareness. Anyone feeling in need of help should talk to teachers, family and friends who will give them courage to be strong. We all need to be kind to each other, this costs nothing.”
In order to raise awareness of mental health and reduce the stigma attached to Sienna has been selling pin badges during break and lunchtimes for the charity Mental Health Foundation and reminding everyone that it is OK not to be OK!
