A group of Mount Carmel pupils went to Accrington library for the first Lancashire Book of the Year event along with five other schools.
The pupils have been given until February next year to read as many of the 96 books on the Book of the Year list as they can. The event leaders helped pass on skills for the pupils to be able to critique the books and they talked through some activities to help them work out what in their opinion makes a good book.
They discussed the need to be objective and open, due to there being books from different genres in order to keep the scores fair. The pupils practiced recommending their highest scoring book to a friend, to see if they could convince the other person to also read this book.
The accompanying Mount Carmel staff commented how it was lovely to see all the pupils contributing their own ideas to the event. They all came back enthusiastic to read more of the Lancashire Book of the Year books and they are looking forward to discussing their opinions and sharing recommended reads with the rest of the group over the next few months. The next stage is for our school to make a shortlist of our top six books from the 26 books that they have sent us.
