Mount Carmel High School in Accrington have recently received racing pigeons at the school and joined Oswaldtwistle Homing Society so they can compete racing their birds with two other local schools St Andrews Primary school in Oswaldtwistle and Longshaw Junior Community School in Blackburn.
The school have received a free pigeon loft from the Royal Pigeon Racing Association together with loft equipment and a wicker basket to train their birds.
They have also received two young racing pigeons from Her Majesty The Queen which have been bred in the royal lofts at Sandringham.
Leading the project at Mount Carmel is Mr Michael Blair who is the school ECO co-ordinator. He is currently training a group of pupils to be loft managers, caring for and training the pigeons.
"This has been such an exciting project for the pupils and staff involved. It is a delight to see the increasing numbers of pupils who come to visit and experience the birds at lunchtimes. Lots of great fun and photo opportunities at the same time as learning about the welfare and upkeep of the birds. We cannot wait for them to start flying independently and to start racing! We are so grateful to Mr Peter Hargreaves and Oswaldtwistle Homing Society for their generous donations, expertise and experience."
Oswaldtwistle Homing Society has its headquarters at the Oswaldtwistle Business and Conference Centre and holds races every weekend from April to September.
