To mark the 5th national Young Carers Awareness Day on 31st January Mount Carmel invited representatives from Carers Link Lancashire into the school to speak to pupils. This national day raises understanding of the challenges faced by 700,000 children and young people under 18 years old in the UK, who provide care and support to someone in their family who is ill or has a disability. The charity campaigns for greater support for young carers and their needs.
Being a young carer is a risk factor for the mental health of children and young people. That’s why Young Carers Awareness Day 2019 will focus on mental health.
Carole Moulton and Paul Fairweather from the Accrington branch of Carers Link Lancashire and Mrs Laura Heys, Mount Carmel Pastoral Support Officer who volunteers for the charity passed on information to pupils during lunchtime offering a drop-in for advice and support. Pastoral Manager Mrs Izabella Marcinkowski coordinated the visit.
