Mount Carmel High School are extremely pleased to announce the success of two pupils at a recent awards event celebrating the youth of Hyndburn.

Year 11 pupil Tyler received the main award of the celebration evening, ‘Young Person of the Year’ with Year 9 pupil Ella receiving the runners up award in the ‘Sporting Individual’ category.

The CHARM event at Oswaldtwistle Civic Theatre which was attended by invited guests and dignitaries featured award presentations for the categories of Young Voice, Sporting Individual, Inspiration, Young Carer and featured the special award for Young Person of the Year.

Leading up to the event Mount Carmel pupils were part of a forum called ‘CHARM’ consisting of young people from across schools in Hyndburn. They were involved in organising this talent and achievement award event to raise funds for two local charities, Ynot and Young Carers.

Prior to the event each school hosted their own talent shows with the winners representing their school in the grand final during the evening. Representing Mount Carmel at the event was Year 11 pupil Kian who fought off tough competition from another 8 pupils in the school heat final. He sung ‘From Now On’ from The Greatest Showman and was joined by backing singers from our school choir.

Mount Carmel nominations for the awards were Year 11 pupil Jordan who was nominated for the Young Voice Award. Ella, Year 9 pupil who was nominated for Sporting Individual Award, Year 11 pupil Tyler was nominated for the Inspiration Award and Year 9 pupil Takara for the Young Carer Award.

Inspiration Award

This award recognised young people who are doing something special and inspirational, often in challenging situations and who are not always getting the recognition that they deserve.

Tyler who was nominated for this award started at Mount Carmel in September 2014 and is currently in year 11 studying for his GCSE’s. Tyler is registered blind with 6% vision meaning he uses a cane for support and works in Braille.

Tyler participates in a full active school life just like the sighted students. He walks around school independently and participates above and beyond in all areas of school life.  Every Thursday, Tyler visits Rough Lee Care Home with other Mount Carmel pupils and plays the piano for the residents.

Tyler never lets anything stop him he will try anything new. He is very sociable and likes to be part of the crowd. He also takes part in extra-curricular activities such as choir and drama workshops.

Miss Bell, Curriculum Leader for Performing Arts at Mount Carmel and Tyler’s Teaching Assistant Mrs Crook commented Tyler is a special pupil with honesty, integrity and a great deal of strength. He is a pupil who inspires everyone he meets and he makes an outstanding contribution to life at school.  He has been a member of the school choir for five years and has taken solos which have been performed publicly at Awards Evenings, Carol singing at the Market Hall, Christmas concerts and community Christmas parties.

He has also composed and performed on the keyboard since Year 7.  His music teacher describes him as pitch perfect.

Tyler says that he often feels lonely as a VI pupil but despite this, he puts 100% into everything he does.  He also has impeccable manners and shows a humility, maturity and determination that leaves everyone he meets in awe of him.  When he leaves school, we hope to get funding for Tyler to attend a specialist VI college where, not only will he be able to continue studying Performing Arts, the subject that he is passionate about, he will be taught how to live, travel, cook and clean independently.  In preparation for this, he has already begun challenging himself by taking the bus into Accrington and walking across town alone. We are going to miss him dearly when he leaves Mount Carmel as he really is the heart and soul of our school!”

Sporting Individual Award

This award recognised young people who give 100% to their sport or activity and who have aspirations to reach their goals.

Year 9 Mount Carmel pupil Ella was nominated for this award.

Head of P.E. Mr Low said “Ella is a fantastic young person. She is a very polite, well-mannered and caring individual that is a superb role model to others. This is evident in her active school roles of sports captain, form captain and peer mentor reader. Ella is always willing to go that extra mile for anybody and demonstrates this when carrying out her responsibilities to a high standard.

Not only is Ella a wonderful, selfless person, she is a keen sports person. Ella currently plays football for Blackburn Rovers and more recently has been selected to play for Lancashire. Ella is an outstanding talent, although very modest. Ella will always support others on the school team and has been instrumental in the school football success, who are unbeaten in 3 years. They are the retaining Hyndburn and Ribble Valley champions, cup winners and futsal National finalists.

Ella will also support the school in other sports where she is very talented, such as cross country, athletics, handball and netball.

Ella really is a talented athlete and I am sure she will go on to have a very bright future in football. All the time maintaining core fundamental values of being a well-rounded and very pleasant person who would do anything for anyone. She fully deservers this recognition for her sporting excellence.”

Young Voice Award

This was awarded to a young person with a powerful voice who has changed something about their school or community that has been of benefit to others. This is an award for a young person with a vision to change things locally.

Head of R.E. Miss Rushton commented “Mount Carmel pupil Jordan has been an outstanding member of the school Youth St Vincent de Paul group (YSVP) and GIFT (Growing in Faith Together) team.

He joined the YSVP group in Year 7 and has been involved in this each school year (he is now in Year 11). As a member of the YSVP group he has regularly visited a local care home, speaking to the residents, playing games with them and cheering them up. Many of the residents he has worked with have had disabilities but Jordan has never believed these people to be any less than his equal.

He has been actively involved in hosting an annual Christmas Party for local elderly and disabled people, serving them a Christmas dinner and socialising with these guests. He has shown true dedication to his role in the YSVP, becoming the chairman of meetings and organising the other members of the group.

As part of his role in the YSVP group, Jordan also helped contribute to the Shoebox appeal.  He helped collect gifts and completed shoeboxes from students and form groups.  Before sending these shoeboxes to the drop off point, the YSVP helped wrap each box. We have collected more than 100 every year!

Jordan has been a truly fantastic member of this group but has never sought attention for his involvement. He is a truly selfless individual who really does deserve this award.”

Young Carer Award

This award is for a person who gives their time to caring for someone.  This could be a family member or friend who is suffering from a long-term illness or injury. It could possibly be that they have helped someone through a difficult time in their life.

Mrs Marcinkowski, Pastoral Manager nominated Takara saying “Takara is a bubbly and confident pupil who makes an outstanding contribution to life at school.  She has been a member of the school choir for the last three years and has taken solos which have been performed publicly at Awards Evenings, Carol singing at the Market Hall, Christmas concerts and community Christmas parties.

She also became a member of the newly formed Brass Band, playing trumpet in Year 8 and has performed at the Summer Awards Evening, becoming one of the most promising and talented musicians that the school has.

Last July, she played Violet Beauregarde in the school production of, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.’  This involved many after school rehearsals, and all the above activities have required Takara to sacrifice most lunchtimes. In addition to all this, Takara has two younger siblings, aged 4 and 5.  She often helps her 5 year old sister with her homework and bathes both her younger brother and sister. Her 4 year old brother has Cerebal Palsy so Takara is a great help to her parents as soon as she arrives home from school. Takara does not get the time to hang out with friends like other teenagers her age do.  Despite this, Takara is always really positive and approaches all aspects of school life with enthusiasm and dedication.  Her determination and strength is to be admired.”
