Mount Carmel were pleased to be involved with CHARM for the third time in 2022.

CHARM is an inter-schools Awards and Talent event which raises money for local charities and includes five local high schools; Mount Carmel, Hollins, St. Christopher's, Accrington Academy and Rhyddings.

Pupils from each school get involved in planning and promoting the event and each school select an act to perform in the final which is held at the Civic Theatre in front of a panel of judges and an audience. Pupils from each school are also nominated for category awards and a prestigious Young Person of the Year Award is a highlight of the event.

Following an amazing performance at the in-school talent show which was held in front of a pupil audience the panel of judges selected Year 7 pupil Alfie P. to represent Mount Carmel in the CHARM event final after his energetic drumming performance of 'My Generation' by The Who.

Alfie showed no sign of any nerves and he put his heart and soul into his performance at the grand final at the Civic and despite extremely good competition from the other contestants we were delighted when it was announced that Alfie was the overall Talent Show winner.

CONGRATULATIONS ALFIE

Please read this summary of the Mount Carmel In-House Talent Show provided by Miss Bell, Performing Arts Curriculum Leader.

"The Mount Carmel winner and the act that represented Mount Carmel was Alfie P. When Alfie performed this for an audience of pupils everyone was blown away by the level of skill, technique and charisma he had on stage. It was like watching a professional musician. Alfie only has one drum lesson per week and is supported by his grandad who transports all his kit wherever he performs. It was thrilling to hear our very first solo drumming performance at school and the only Year 7 brave enough to enter, the atmosphere was electric whilst he performed!

Alfie was up against a talented array of singers, songwriters, dancers and gymnasts and it was wonderful to see pupils finally back on the school stage where they belong. It was so difficult to choose a winner because we saw so many gifted, unique, inspiring acts, for example Rebecca H., our runner up, wrote, sang and accompanied herself on piano with an original song inspired by Victoria Wood and Tim Minchin about a Vampire who loves Garlic Bread! Third place went to Matilda R. who performed a contemporary solo dance.

Other highlights included Shanaya RH. who performed a beautiful pop ballad that she wrote herself. Emily McN. and Cian B. brought the fun factor performing with a full dance routine and costume, 'We Don't Talk about Bruno,' from the new popular Disney Movie, 'Encanto'.

There were other amazing vocal performances from Madison T., Peaches C., Mia H., Isobel H. and Shannon S. as well as an impressive Gymnastic/dance routine performed by Trinity W., Imogen McG., Mia McG., Nicole W-L. and Minnie A.

They are all winners in our eyes.

In addition to the pupils mentioned above, two Year 9 pupils were chosen to represent Mount Carmel as forum members, these were Maddie B. and Madison E.  As well as planning and designing the red-carpet awards night at Oswaldtwistle Civic Theatre, the group have also gained exciting experience in;

  • Event Management
  • Sound and lighting
  • Backstage Management
  • Front of House
  • Design of programme for the event
  • Presenting
  • Design of promotional and marketing materials

The programme was run by staff from Ynot Aspire, Carer’s Link and Oswaldtwistle Civic Theatre.  It is a really exciting opportunity for young people to get involved with and we look forward to next year!"
