Mount Carmel Year 8 pupils enjoyed a day out of the classroom to visit Grasmere in the Lake District. Both English and Geography were making the most of all that this beautiful little corner of the world has to offer: walks in the stunning scenery, the beautiful shops and village green, and Dove Cottage, home to the early 19th Century poet William Wordsworth.

Pupils enjoyed the scenic coach journey there as we passed lakes, hills and fields. When they got to Grasmere, we saw all four seasons within our first ten minutes of being there, but thankfully everyone was prepared for both sunny spells and sudden showers.

Over the course of the day, pupils rotated round three activities, entering each one with enthusiasm and interest. After a walk in the shadows of Helm Crag, students got to learn about Wordsworth who was inspired by these stunning surroundings, and visit the place where he lived and wrote, before looking at the village and taking part in a fieldwork activity. Each element of the trip complemented the others, and both the Geography and English curriculum were enriched by each other. One of the highlights in Dove Cottage was seeing the early manuscripts written in Wordsworth's own hand and getting to write with a quill and ink!

Sadly, there wasn't time to stop at the iconic Grasmere Gingerbread Shop, but we did walk past it, and the warm, enticing smell was almost as good.

We'll just have to go back next year!
