The Biology Challenge, run by the Royal Society of Biology stimulates curiosity for the natural world and encourages students to take an interest in Biology above and beyond what is covered in the classroom.
In preparation for the competition, from January, pupils had the opportunity to attend the weekly Biology Challenge Club, led by Mrs Haworth. Pupils have looked at a range of topics from Ecology on the conservation of coral reefs and the importance of Trophic Cascades, to Physiology, completing a heart dissection and delving deeper into the digestive system.
The competition consists of two exam papers, taken online in May 2022, under exam conditions.
This is the first year that Mount Carmel has competed in the competition, over 120 pupils took part from years 7-10, competing against 41,000 students worldwide.
From past experience, pupils who have performed well in this competition have gone on to study a range of Degrees, including Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, Medicine at the University of Oxford and Law at the University of Durham.
This year we are very pleased to announce a number of pupils who have achieved special awards for their performance in the competition.
From Year 7, achieving a Commended award for their attainment, and we will be expecting big things from these pupils as they move through school, are Mohammed A-W,Theo S and Cole H. From Year 9, Harry W, Rehan B and Mia McG also achieved a commended award. Sakia M and River Y were awarded Highly Commended.
Alex C was our top performing pupil. He was awarded a Silver award. This places Alex in the top 12 % of the 41,000 pupils who competed internationally from 550 different schools. He was very close to achieving a Gold award, which he and many others will hopefully achieve next year. Well done to all the pupils who participated.
