At Mount Carmel R.C. High School, we believe that education is about much more than what happens in the classroom. On Friday 23 October, pupils across Years 7–11 took part in A Day with a Difference, a day designed to develop essential life skills, broaden horizons and provide exciting learning experiences beyond the usual curriculum.
Throughout the day, pupils had opportunities to build confidence, develop resilience, explore future careers, work collaboratively and reflect on the choices they make.
Year 7 – Faith, Creativity and Teamwork
Year 7 pupils took part in activities led by NET Ministries or a practical Design and Technology Day.
These experiences encouraged pupils to develop their creativity, strengthen friendships, explore their values and grow in confidence. Through discussion, reflection and hands-on challenges, pupils had opportunities to discover new talents and develop their skills.
Year 8 – Skills for Life
Year 8 pupils focused on developing skills that will support them both inside and outside school.
Some pupils participated in practical team building activities, whilst others followed our activities in school, exploring communication, teamwork, resilience and future aspirations. Activities included teamwork challenges, careers exploration, a resilience session and a Dragons' Den-style challenge, where pupils worked together to design and pitch their own ideas.
Pupils also explored positive choices, self-confidence and healthy relationships.
Year 9 – History, Respect and Looking to the Future
Year 9 pupils explored important historical and social issues, with some students visiting the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool.
Pupils remaining in school took part in activities exploring history, personal development and future careers. The day also included resilience activities and an exciting Dragons' Den Challenge, encouraging creativity, problem-solving and presentation skills.
Year 10 – Exploring Future Opportunities
For Year 10, the focus was on careers, work experience, personal responsibility and preparing for the future.
Pupils met representatives from colleges during a College Marketplace, helping them explore their post-16 options and begin thinking about the next stage of their education.
They also took part in a Fire Service presentation, Wasted Lives, which highlighted the importance of making safe and responsible decisions.
Further activities supported students in researching careers, exploring work experience opportunities and developing resilience when facing challenges.
Year 11 – Preparing for the Next Chapter
As Year 11 pupils prepared for their next steps beyond Mount Carmel, their day focused on confidence, careers and the skills needed for future success.
Pupils took part in careers research, interview preparation and a Dragons' Den-style challenge designed to strengthen communication, teamwork and presentation skills.
They also attended the Fire Service's Wasted Lives presentation and explored strategies for overcoming setbacks through our resilience session.
Different Activities, Shared Opportunities. Although each year group followed a different programme, the message behind A Day with a Difference was the same, learning takes many forms, and every experience is an opportunity to grow.
Throughout the day, pupils were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, embrace new challenges, work positively with others and recognise their own strengths and potential. It was wonderful to see pupils engaging with different experiences, developing new skills and making the most of the opportunities available to them.
A huge thank you to our visiting organisations, external partners and all members of staff whose hard work, enthusiasm and support helped make the day possible.
