Mount Carmel Year 10 pupil Thomas has been awarded a Bravery Award from The High Sheriff of Lancashire presented to Thomas by the Commanding Officer of Accrington Sea Cadet Unit.

Thomas was nominated for the award following an incident earlier this year but due to Covid-19 the result had been delayed until just recently.

Here is the nomination statement "While out with friends, Thomas encountered a barefooted woman screaming for help. He ran over to the lady and asked her what the issue was. She had been involved in a violent domestic dispute and was bleeding from cuts on her arm. An intoxicated man appeared on the scene and Thomas, despite a very intimidating situation, stood between her and the male (who eventually walked off) preventing a serious incident from escalating.
Thomas took the lady back into her flat, not knowing who or what was inside. The floor was covered with broken glass which he removed. Using his first aid training and other skills learned with Accrington Sea Cadets, Thomas cleaned the woman's wounds and calmed her down, called 999 and gave all the information required for the police to attend the incident within 10 minutes
."

Thomas has attended Accrington Sea Cadets since he was 11 years old where he has learnt lots of life skills as well as gaining many qualifications including First Aid which proved to be very useful when faced with this incident.

His very proud Mum said "Thomas is very much against bullying in any form and it is not surprising he went to help this lady."

Mr Bowers, headteacher at Mount Carmel commented "We were delighted to hear of this award that Thomas has been granted and are so proud this mature young man is one of our pupils. Thomas will go far in his life with the skills and empathy he has clearly displayed in this incident. He truly deserved this accolade. Well done Thomas."
